Closeness

A rubber band is made to stretch,

But its power is to contract.

It is a close binder of goods--

It unites what it keeps intact.

Love is a binder of people--

It surrounds as a loving net.

It stretches around to include,

It contracts to make intimate.

We can resist it till it snaps

Or wear out its pulling matter--

One is painful, one exhausting,

And in the end we all scatter.

Interruptions

A small and languid river eddy

Swirls foamy bubbles round and round.

So slow, so weak, yet still it moves

The bubbles that to it are bound.

Some that break free and move along

Are snagged in yet another stall,

More slowly moving than the first

Where change comes hard or not at all.

Unhindered by the cloying banks

All this while the center flows--

A downhill slide in rippling chatter

As toward the sea it onward goes.

Road Trip

 Attired in myriad shades

Of green and asphalt

And sequined with bright splashes

Of reddish clover

And silvery maned grasses,

The countryside flashes by

As images of Magied camels

Compete with jaw-stretching yawns.

Time to change drivers.

Perseverance

Straining tethers taut
The bonds that hold me tight
Keep the harness as it ought
And binds me to the fight.

Though freedom beckons to me
Alluring my weak will
The task at hand is duty--
I'll plow the furrow still.

The time of leisure is not come
And work remains undone.
That may be well enough for some--
I'll stop when I have won.

Music Dementia

I visited my grandma.
I thought it would be fun
But she messed with my cerebrum
And my life has come undone.

It started out so innocent.
She thought it most sublime
To share with me the music
She enjoyed when in her prime.

To me it sounded sappy
But she started in to dance
To the music of her young days
Full of dubious romance.

Now other things she’s shown me
I’ve appreciated in the main,
But this is just disaster.
Lawrence Welk is on my brain!

The next day, sure as shootin’
I hummed some dumb refrain,
And my pals all choked with laughter.
Lawrence Welk was on my brain.

The music never goes away.
Revolving round I find
There’s no way to get rid of
Lawrence Welk tunes on your mind.

Well the next week I went back
And I tell you, sure as shootin’
Lawrence Welk was driven out!
Replaced by ole’ Wayne Newton…
